October was a busy and exciting one for Rose Drive Elementary School. Along with so many fall-inspired classroom projects swirling around campus like autumn leaves, we also celebrated Red Ribbon Week and our annual Jog-A-Thon.
Red Ribbon Week kicked off on Monday, Oct. 26. Our “Say No To Drugs” theme encouraged students to dress up each day to show their commitment to staying drug free. Monday asked students to “Team Up Against Drugs” by wearing their favorite sports team jersey or T-shirt. Tuesday featured students dressed to represent their “dream career” — because if you can dream it, you can be it! Wednesday saw students wearing mixed up outfits, because Rose Drive Roadrunners do not get “mixed-up” with drugs! On Thursday, we promised to “lei off drugs” by wearing leis and Hawaiian-themed clothing. On Friday, students found themselves with a new principal! For the second year in a row, third grader Kate Bowen won the “Principal For a Day” contest by bringing in the highest amount of pledges. Friday also happened to be the day that students “ran away from drugs” by participating in the annual Jog-A-Thon. It was a huge success, thanks to our magnificent PTA. Students ran, walked and skipped their way around the track. Parents and family members cheered the students on, offering water and refreshing squirts from spray bottles. Rosie the Roadrunner was out and about, performing dance-offs with the Chick-fil-A cow, posing for pictures with students, and giving out endless high-fives and hugs. Students then cooled off with popsicles. From the energetic music and our entertaining DJ to the very special appearance from Rosie and the cow, we want to thank our PTA for such a memorable event. What a super way to end a wonderful week and month! Pictured below is Principal for a Day Kate Bowen making morning announcements and meeting Rosie, the school mascot.
First grade and “Dem Bones”
Despite last Friday being both a minimum day and our school Jog-A-Thon, Mrs. Parmenter’s first graders made the most of every possible instructional minute. The subject of the day was anatomy, brought to life through various books, a BrainPOP video, songs and music, and a skeleton model. These first graders are now fully “boned up” on what it takes to have a healthy skeleton. Students are pictured with their individual skeleton models.
