Students donate and distribute over 2,000 books for Van Buren Elementary’s “Great Book Giveaway”

Van Buren Elementary School's Great Book Giveaway!

At Van Buren Elementary School, Mrs. Scott’s 3rd grade class recently developed a plan to recycle unwanted books in order to place them into the hands of students who will read and learn from them.

Leading up to Spring Break, the class encouraged all Roadrunner families to spring clean their at-home libraries and to donate gently used books that they have outgrown. The response was tremendous, as students and families brought in over 2,000 books!

Once they were all collected, the students processed the books by erasing any pencil marks or identifiers and adding a label with the school’s project name on it, “The Great Book Giveaway!”

Then on Monday, May 13, all 2000+ books were separated by grade level and every student in the school was allowed to choose two books to take up home. The following day, with many extra books leftover, all students were again able to take as many books as they wanted and would read! From this experience, Mrs. Scott’s students were filled with gratitude and a new appreciation for kindness.

“Thank you to all who participated,” Scott shared.
