Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) AVID Tutors recently gathered together to fine-tune their mentoring skills as they prepare for another successful year supporting AVID middle and high school students.

The tutors, who attend colleges such as Cal Poly Pomona, University of California, Irvine, California State University, Fullerton, Northern Arizona University, and Fullerton College, help provide academic rigor and build relational capacity with AVID students. Some tutors are even recent college graduates.

Many times, PYLUSD students report feeling connected to these mentors who have faced similar challenges as they navigate the increasingly-demanding pathway to college. Bernardo Yorba Middle School AVID Coordinator, Leigh Ann Swarm, led a variety of activities for the AVID tutors that will help ensure they are equipped to lead successful tutorials at El Dorado, Valencia, and Esperanza high Schools, as well as all six of PYLUSD middle schools.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a nationwide non-profit organization devoted to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
