Ruby Drive Elementary School Welcomes Educators From Across Southern California to Highlight AVID Strategies and Celebrate National Recognition

On April 9, Ruby Drive Elementary School in Placentia hosted 80 educational leaders from across Southern California for an AVID Showcase. The event opened with a special recognition from AVID in honor of its 45th anniversary, naming Ruby Drive one of the top 45 schools nationwide for exemplary implementation of the AVID College Readiness System.

A designated AVID Showcase School since 2018, Ruby Drive provides visiting educators the opportunity to observe best practices and gain insight into strategies that promote academic achievement and educational equity. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to closing achievement gaps and preparing all students for postsecondary success. Each year, AVID trains more than 70,000 educators to implement student-centered, equitable instructional practices.

During the showcase, attendees observed AVID strategies in action across all grade levels, including integration of the WICOR framework—Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading. Classroom visits and student work reflected the school’s strong vertical and horizontal alignment of AVID methodologies.

The event concluded with panel discussions featuring Ruby Drive students, staff, alumni, and families. Topics included instructional practices, professional development, communication structures, and evidence of student growth and achievement.

The showcase was made possible through the leadership of Principal Lisa Carmona, AVID Program Specialist Paul La Porte, and the support of the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District. Since adopting AVID in 2015, Ruby Drive has demonstrated a sustained commitment to fostering a rigorous, inclusive academic environment that continues to serve as a model for schools nationwide.
