On Monday, December 2, students Valencia High School and Kraemer Middle School competed in the AppJam+ Fall 2019 Showcase Finale at University of California, Irvine. The only PYLUSD team, which called themselves the Golden Sun, won 2nd place against other local schools for their original app called “Hero Survey.”
Leading up to this event, AppJam+, an initiative of Dreams for Schools, paired the PYLUSD students from the two schools with college mentors from Computer Science and Engineering fields. The goal was to expose the students to mobile app development and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) career pathways.
For weeks leading up to the showcase, college mentors worked with the PYLUSD students during programming sessions. The students utilized AppInventor to create their STEM-related mobile app, Hero Survey, designated for a K-12 audience.
Congratulations to students Nathan Do, Evan Ishii, Giovanni Cruz, Alberto Nequiz, and Jorge Estrada for this great accomplishment. The Golden Sun team received a medal, t-shirt, certificate, and Star Wars-themed Sphero robots for their hard work!
