Esperanza and Valencia academic decathlon teams earn top honors at state competition

EHS Academic Decathlon team.

Congratulations to the members of Esperanza and Valencia high schools’ Academic Decathlon teams. Both teams recently participated in the state competition and earned top honors. The competition took place online on March 1, 5, and 12. Below is a summary of each school’s results.

Esperanza High School
Esperanza placed 5th overall in division 3 at state (division 3 had 20 schools). Three Esperanza students earned medals:
1) Mihir Bhanji: Bronze medal in science
2) Avinaash Sarma: Silver medal in interview
3) Megan Davis: 5 Bronze medals in art, economics, literature, essay & overall individual.

The medals will be mailed to students later this month. The team’s advisor is Kressler Nguyen-Valdez.

Valencia High School
The Tigers placed 3rd in Division II, which puts them in the Top 20 schools in California! The following students earned individual medals.
1) Carrie Lin earned a Gold in Social Science
2) Kate Toller earned a Silver in Speech
3) Aaron Kim earned a Bronze in Music and Science, Silver in Essay and was 3rd overall in Scholastic.
