On Saturday, March 19, El Dorado High School competed in the Academic WorldQuest competition. Their team, nicknamed Team Awesome, featured students Arya Darvish, Greeva Ramani, Marlowe Snapp, and Bailey Alam. The Golden Hawks took first place at the Orange County competition!
Academic WorldQuest is a flagship program of the national network of World Affairs Councils, located in more than 90 communities across the country. It is a team game testing high school students’ knowledge of international affairs, current events, human geography, world history, and culture.
EDHS beat 6-year-in-a-row winner, Marina High School. There were 12 teams representing schools such as Marina, Corona Del Mar, Fountain Valley, Arnold Beckman, and Crean Lutheran to name some of them. Ages ranged from sophomores to seniors. Marina’s coach complimented El Dorado on their performance and couldn’t believe some of them were only sophomores.
In the end, although second and third place was determined by a sudden death round, El Dorado clinched first place by roughly 9 points. The competition featured the Consulate-General from Qatar as a guest speaker and he awarded each player on the first-place team with a new iPad Pro! As a result of their win, the team also gets an all-expense-paid trip to Washington DC to compete at the National competition representing El Dorado and Orange County!
Teacher Kelly Smith oversees the school’s Academic WorldQuest team. Great job, Golden Hawks.
Congratulations Hawks! Proud of you for this wonderful accomplishment.
