Each year during the holiday season, the “Sock Tree” comes to the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) office courtesy of California School Employees Association (CSEA) Chapter #293. The Christmas tree is decorated with donated socks from employees all around the district.
Right before Winter Recess, CSEA executive officers will donate the socks to the district’s McKinney-Vento program. McKinney Vento benefits students who are living in transitional housing situations such as doubled or tripled up with other families for economic reasons, or living in homeless shelters, campgrounds, or cars.
This beloved tradition was inspired by former PYLUSD employee and CSEA executive board secretary, Gussie Morgan. One holiday season, Gussie and her coworkers were determined to donate much-needed items, like socks and undergarments, to local charities and community services organizations. After organizing a sock drive, Gussie had the idea to display the donations on a tree. The Sock Tree has been a holiday staple in PYLUSD ever since.
