The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District recently held a contest soliciting designs for a medallion that will be given to all graduating seniors who receive the California State Seal of Civic Engagement. Bill Meng, a sophomore in Advanced Graphic Design at Valencia High School, won the contest with his unique design (pictured below).
The State Seal of Civic Engagement recognizes high school graduates who have demonstrated excellence in civics education; an understanding of both the United States and California Constitutions as well as our democratic system of government; and actively participated in an impactful civic engagement project to serve the community. Recipients of this recognition will receive a gold seal on their diploma as well as a medallion to wear at graduation. More information is available at www.pylusd.org/ssce.
On May 4, district leaders went out on “prize patrol” to surprise Bill and give him the good news in teacher Brian Johnson’s graphic design class. The group included Director of High School Education Gina Aguilar, Principal Chris Herzfeld, Administrator of Secondary Education Connor Drake, and Teachers on Special Assignment Allie Lloyd, Lisa Gersbacher, and Michelle Steuber.
Bill’s design has now been cast and he received the first one! It will be given to this year’s graduates as well as those in future years. His design stood out in a group of 28 medallion submissions and 6 finalist designs. Way to go, Tiger!
