Valencia Student Receives Presidential and Congressional Awards

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) is proud to announce that Neel Kumar, a senior at Valencia High School, has received both the Presidential Award and the Congressional Award for his outstanding commitments to community service.

The Congressional Award is an award given by Congress to young Americans. In 1979, the United States Congress established the award program to “recognize initiative, service, and achievement in young people.”

The Congressional Award recognizes the setting and meeting of goals in four program areas: voluntary public service, personal development, physical fitness, and expedition/exploration. Based on time commitments to each of the areas, participants earn bronze, silver, or gold Congressional Award certificates and bronze, silver, or gold Congressional Award medals. Neel received the gold medal, which requires a minimum commitment of 800 hours.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA) is given to the most excellent volunteers in recognition of their impact. In order to be eligible for the gold medal, volunteers must complete over 250 hours of community service hours. Neel received this award due to his partnership with the Lions Heart Volunteering Nonprofit OC Chapter. Lions Heart of Orange County is a certifying Organization that has been granted authority through an application and review process to give out the PVSA to its volunteers.

A recognition ceremony, attended by Congresswoman Young Kim, was held to celebrate Neel’s dedication to service. Congratulations!
