Buena Vista Virtual Academy senior, Angelica Arellano-Yacelga, is training in Germany to compete in the sport of table tennis at the 2024 Paris Olympics this summer. She is preparing to be one of the top International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Team Ranking players in March of 2024 in order to qualify.
Angelica has been playing table tennis since she was four years old, and has been earning medals in the sport since 2014. While Angelica calls Yorba Linda home, she has dual citizenship and is competing for the country of Ecuador.
Her coach describes her as a very complete player with a balanced game in attack and blocking as well as on the right like backwards. Angelica trains at her base club in the city of El Monte, California with her coach Xiu Zhen Lin from China. She has trained in several countries throughout her sport career such as China, Spain, Portugal and currently in Germany.
In 2023, Angélica played for SPG Voitsberg Don Bosco, in the Professional Table Tennis League, Austria. Her team became champions, obtaining promotion to the next division. Thanks to her participation in Austria, Angélica is now a reinforcement of TuS Furstenfeldbruck TT of the professional league, Germany.
According to principal Jamie Jauch, Angelica enjoys learning at Buena Vista Virtual Academy because it allows her to complete high school while traveling the world to follow her passion. “Keep an eye on this incredibly talented athlete,” she shared.
