Congratulations to Valencia High School’s Academic Decathlon team for a successful showing at the California Academic Decathlon in Santa Clara! The event took place March 21-24. The Tigers performed exceptionally well, leading the school to earn their top overall finish in VHS history.

In Division 2, Valencia’s decathletes took first place overall and first place in Super Quiz. According to Coach Calen Rau, the team scored so well that they beat more than half of the Division 1 teams and finished 7th out of 53 competing teams in California. California teams consistently win at the National Academic Decathlon, which puts VHS among the top schools in the nation.

The VHS team was anchored by sophomore Irene Pan, who finished as the 8th overall decathlete in California and number one in Division 2. The rest of the team included Ryan Lin, Saebyeok Keum, Aina Pan, Rini Dagli, Asher McCathern (3rd overall in Division 2), Lance Ho, Owen Martin, and Erin Lee, who took home a number of individual awards.

“If you see these students please congratulate them!” Coach Rau shared. “Special thanks to my Assistant Coaches Kaitlyn Reuter and Nathan Vega. Our success wouldn’t be possible without their help.”

Academic Decathlon brings together teams of high school students to compete in the ten areas of art, economics, essay, interview, literature, mathematics, music, science, social science and speech. This year’s theme was “Technology and Humanity.” A unique aspect of the program is that teams are composed of students from all academic achievement levels.
