On Thursday, October 16, Yorba Linda High School senior Grace Peng participated in the CalRx Insulin Press Conference in Los Angeles, where she spoke alongside Governor Gavin Newsom. During her remarks, Grace shared her family’s personal experience with diabetes and emphasized the critical importance of ensuring insulin affordability for all Californians.
The press conference represented a landmark moment for the state, following the passage of Senate Bill 40, which caps insulin copayments at $35 per month for individuals with private health insurance. In addition, the recent announcement that CalRx insulin glargine will soon be available for $11 per pen, regardless of insurance status, marks another significant advancement in improving access to this essential medication.
Grace’s advocacy on this issue stems from her close connection to family members living with Type 2 diabetes, which has motivated her to pursue efforts that promote health equity and community education. Over the past year, she has served as a Youth Ambassador for the American Diabetes Association (ADA), where she has worked to increase awareness of diabetes prevention, advocate for equitable healthcare policies, and support legislative initiatives such as SB 40. Through her leadership, Grace continues to inspire her peers to engage in public health advocacy and champion accessible healthcare for all.
