Valencia High School’s AVID program recently marked the third year of its partnership with the University of California, Irvine, during which physicians and medical professionals engaged AVID students in grades 9–12 in a comprehensive seminar focused on healthcare careers. This collaboration continues to serve as a meaningful bridge between secondary education and the medical field, providing students with valuable insight into the wide range of pathways available within the healthcare profession.
During the seminar, guest speakers from UC Irvine shared reflections on their professional journeys and offered guidance to students aspiring to enter the medical field. The discussion emphasized that preparation for a career in healthcare begins well before postsecondary education is completed and requires intentional planning and early engagement.
Students were encouraged to pursue early exposure through volunteer opportunities in hospitals and community clinics to develop a foundational understanding of healthcare environments. Additionally, speakers underscored the importance of establishing a strong academic foundation, particularly through rigorous coursework in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The value of proactive networking was also highlighted, with recommendations including participation in job shadowing experiences, mentorship opportunities, and university-sponsored summer enrichment programs.
This ongoing partnership reflects Valencia High School’s commitment as an AVID National Demonstration School to preparing students for college and career success. Through experiences such as this, students are equipped not only with aspirations, but also with the strategic knowledge and professional tools necessary to pursue and achieve their goals in the medical field.
