PYLUSD Students Shine at Orange County AVID Standout Senior Award Ceremony

On April 15, 2024, the Barclay Theatre in Irvine served as the setting for a distinguished evening of recognition hosted by the Orange County Department of Education. The event honored AVID Senior Standouts from school districts across the region, celebrating students who exemplify academic excellence, resilience, and leadership. In attendance were Carrie Buck, President of the Board of Education, Dr. Kym LeBlanc-Esparza, Superintendent of Schools, and additional PYLUSD district leadership members, underscoring the District’s commitment to recognizing student achievement. Among those honored were four exceptional students from the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD), each demonstrating the core values of the AVID program through their achievements and contributions.

From El Dorado High School, Isaac Lobatos was selected as an AVID Senior Standout in recognition of his perseverance and determination. Despite being diagnosed with cancer at the end of middle school, Isaac remained steadfast in his academic pursuits and personal growth. His accomplishments include recognition as a HOBY Youth Scholar, a Horatio Alger Scholar, and participation in the UCI Future Leaders Initiative. Motivated by his experiences, Isaac plans to pursue a career in physical therapy, with the goal of supporting others through similar challenges.

Representing Esperanza High School, Alliyah Jeremy Arriola was recognized for her commitment to academic excellence and service. After immigrating to the United States from the Philippines, Alliyah challenged herself by enrolling in Advanced Placement and honors courses while completing the school’s Medical Sciences pathway. Through an internship at a local medical clinic, she is working toward certification as a medical assistant. Inspired by her mother’s battle with cancer, Alliyah aspires to become a certified registered nurse anesthetist, reflecting her dedication to helping others and contributing to the healthcare field.

Dulce (Bella) Castrejon Juarez of Valencia High School was selected for her academic achievement, leadership, and positive contributions to both her school and community. Maintaining a rigorous schedule of Advanced Placement and honors coursework, Bella earned a 4.1 cumulative grade point average while demonstrating resilience in the face of personal health challenges. Her consistent poise, maturity, and collaborative spirit distinguish her as a model AVID student and a respected leader among her peers.

From Yorba Linda High School, Braylene Easley was recognized for embodying the values of responsibility, initiative, and kindness. Throughout her participation in AVID, she demonstrated a strong sense of accountability and consistently contributed to a positive classroom environment. Known for her thoughtful demeanor and quiet confidence, Braylene plans to continue her educational journey at Fullerton College, where she is well-positioned for continued success.

The AVID Senior Standout recognition reflects more than academic achievement; it highlights the resilience, leadership, and commitment to community demonstrated by these students. As they transition beyond high school, Isaac, Alliyah, Bella, and Braylene exemplify the lasting impact of dedication and purpose, serving as an inspiration to their peers and the broader PYLUSD community.

The AVID program, Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. Each year, AVID provides professional learning to more than 70,000 educators, supporting schools in implementing equitable, student-centered instructional practices.
