On April 24, students in Valencia High School’s Regional Occupational Program (ROP) Culinary Arts program demonstrated exceptional culinary expertise and professionalism at the annual Vital Link Mystery Basket Culinary Challenge, earning a second-place finish among ten competing teams from across the region.
Modeled after the popular culinary competition Chopped, the event challenged students to create a restaurant-quality dish using a selection of mystery ingredients while also showcasing the workplace readiness skills emphasized in Career Technical Education (CTE) programs. Teams were evaluated not only on the quality and creativity of their dishes, but also on professional standards such as coordinated uniforms, effective kitchen communication, teamwork, and time management.
This year’s mystery basket included chicken thighs, soft tofu, tangerines, green bell peppers, pasta, and evaporated milk. Valencia’s students rose to the challenge by developing a thoughtfully executed entrée that highlighted both technical skill and culinary innovation.
The team prepared a tangerine-based marinade that enhanced the flavor of the chicken before pan-searing and roasting it to perfection. Their dish was complemented by a unique pasta sauce created by puréeing green bell peppers and blending them with soft tofu and evaporated milk to produce a smooth, flavorful accompaniment. Judges commended the team’s precise execution, attention to detail, and professional presentation throughout the competition.
