On May 2 in Fresno, El Dorado High School senior Fernando Nuñez was recognized by both the California State PTA and the National PTA as the 2025–2026 California State Winner and National Winner of the PTA Reflections Contest in the Accessible Arts Division.
Fernando earned these prestigious honors for his original film, My Life in Puzzle Pieces, which explores his personal journey of growth, resilience, and belonging. Through the film, Fernando reflects on early expectations surrounding his communication abilities and chronicles the significant progress he has achieved through perseverance, determination, and the unwavering support of his family and educators.
In his artist statement, Fernando explained that the film illustrates how he overcame early challenges and developed the skills necessary to participate confidently in a variety of settings. He connected his experience to the Reflections theme, “I Belong,” emphasizing the vital role that his parents and former teachers played in helping him achieve success and foster meaningful connections.
Fernando’s award-winning work highlights the transformative impact of support, dedication, and inclusive educational opportunities. His story serves as a powerful example of how belonging is cultivated through encouragement, perseverance, and the collective efforts of those who help individuals reach their full potential.
