Freshman Films Recognized at OCDE Youth Choice Awards

On May 1, students in El Dorado High School’s Video Production program received notable recognition at the annual Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) Youth Choice Awards Ceremony, where 10 films produced entirely by freshman students were selected for screening. The student-created films explored significant topics including mental health awareness, suicide prevention, substance use prevention, and cultural identity, demonstrating both creative excellence and thoughtful engagement with issues affecting young people.

In the Suicide Prevention category, the following films were recognized:

  • A Fresh Start — Benett Chavez and Nathan Pena
  • It Doesn’t Stay Night — Kate Wissink and Isla Wissink
  • Dissonance — Cooper Thompson and Asher Im

In the Mental Health category, recognized films included:

  • The Imperfect Athlete — Izzy Chung and Alaina Zamora
  • Bottled Up — Angela Hendrix, Rita Cirata, and Viveka Mayo
  • On Either Side — Madison Song and Taylor Song

In the Through the Lens of Culture category, selected films were:

  • The Victor(y) — Charlie Wilson, Faith Wolf, and Katie Villarreal
  • Casting Out — Nathan Diep and Evan Shultz

In the Substance Use Prevention category, recognized entries included:

  • Not The Only Option — Amy Syams, Bianca Ramirez, and Jayden Gonzalez
  • Stop It at the Source — Presley Langworthy, Evie Anaya, and Claire Shipe

Having 10 films screened at the OCDE Youth Choice Awards represents a significant achievement, particularly for first-year video production students.
