On Friday, August 28, Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Kym LeBlanc-Esparza welcomed nearly 20 middle and high school students for the inaugural meeting of the PYL Student Leadership Board.
During the two-hour meeting, students built connections, established goals for the year, and engaged in thoughtful discussions surrounding two timely topics: artificial intelligence and cell phone policies in schools. Students reviewed news articles and current perspectives to examine responsible technology use and consider how district policies can support safe, balanced, and productive learning environments.
As PYLUSD continues to review and update policies related to emerging technology and student cell phone use, members of the Student Leadership Board will have opportunities to provide meaningful input based on their experiences as learners. Their perspectives will help inform district conversations and ensure student voice remains an important component of the decision-making process.
The inaugural meeting reflects the district’s commitment to the PYL Promise by creating authentic opportunities for students to contribute to conversations that directly shape their educational experiences. The Student Leadership Board will continue meeting throughout the school year to explore important issues, share perspectives, and strengthen student engagement across PYLUSD.
