El Camino Real High School in Placentia selected as a Model Continuation School

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) is proud to announce that El Camino Real High School was recently honored as a 2016 Model Continuation High School by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson.

El Camino Real is just one of 37 schools across California selected for this prestigious designation. It was recognized for its innovative teaching approaches that enable students with diverse needs to complete their high school education.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the students and staff of ECRHS,” said Principal Gordon Chamberlin. “This award reflects the amazing support we receive from the district, as well as the unrivaled commitment to excellence that our teachers have in fostering 21st-century learning opportunities.”

“El Camino is a wonderful school,” added PYLUSD Superintendent Dr. Doug Domene. “I’ve witnessed these students develop positive attitudes and effective skills that make them career and college ready. This Model Continuation honor underscores how successful PYLUSD’s alternative education is at building the bridge between failure and success.”

El Camino Real High School is a fully accredited high school serving approximately 240 students in grades nine through 12. It has been designated a Model Continuation High School three previous times, and has also been awarded a six-year Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation numerous times.

The school offers alternative settings and strategies to allow students to earn a high school diploma. On a daily basis, students are held to the same rigorous standards as students in other comprehensive high schools.

Despite numerous challenges, El Camino students are determined to rise above their limitations. The school’s small size allows for individualized attention, and fosters a nurturing and supportive environment.

Students benefit from the supplemental programs and services offered, such as independent study courses, career counseling, job placement, apprenticeships and concurrent enrollment in community college.

The Model Continuation High School Recognition Program is a partnership between the California Department of Education (CDE) and the California Continuation Education Association (CCEA). A benefit of this joint effort is the establishment of a resource list of quality programs, which can serve as models for other continuation high schools.

The selected schools, which retain their title for three years, will be recognized at the 2016 CCEA State Conference from April 29 to May 1 in Riverside.
