The Lakeview Elementary School fourth grade field trip to the Ocean Institute was amazing. When the students arrived, they were greeted by the first mate and then boarded the boat. On the boat, students became sailors, and were quickly put to work. The rules of the boat were explained, and then sailors had to do their jobs like tying rope, loading the ship and putting up a sail. After lunch, students were taught about tanning hides. They also had to problem solve using the knowledge they had of pulleys to raise a sail without touching any rope. It was a perfect ending after reading the book Two Years Before the Mast by Richard Henry Dana Jr. Everyone learned a lot, and had a great time!
