El Dorado Academic Decathlon Team places fourth overall in county competition

El Dorado High School’s junior varsity (JV) Academic Decathlon Team placed fourth overall in the 9th/10th grade Division 1 Orange County Academic Decathlon competition on Saturday, May 21. Team members are Dana Arneal, Ally Eiler, Megan Haynes, Carys Houck Teal, Jason Kison, Leon Li, Kristen Mabry, Jasia Nakamoto, Ryen Perry, Vanessa Ragan, Ganesh Ramachandran and Teju Ramani.

“It seems to be the highest placement ever for El Dorado,” said coach Bob Kanne. There were 19 Orange County high schools in the competition.

The students earned 19 individual medals, in addition to the plaque and medals for the fourth place finish. Dana Arneal earned the most medals, six, including the third place overall individual in her GPA category. Jason Kison earned five medals. Kristen Mabry had the highest individual score on the team, and earned three medals. Vanessa Ragan, Ryen Perry and Leon Li also earned individual medals.

Valencia and Esperanza also placed in the top five overall scores. This is the first time that a single school district has placed three schools in the top five!
