JPL internship a benefit to both Valencia students and teachers

Valencia High School seniors Nathan Fortner, Brennen Irey and Gavril Moniaga – all members of the outstanding Val Tech Academy – completed their eight-week internship with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) “JPL SpaceSHIP” program this past summer.

Valencia teachers assisted these students in taking advantage of this unique opportunity at JPL’s Pasadena location. Leonard Takahashi, Will Truong and Dean Yoshimura not only transported the Val Tech students, but were also able to participate in activities designed for educators. Mr. Takahashi praised the internship by stating, “Our high school interns were not just doing ‘busy work,’ but were doing actual work helping their mentors with their projects. [They] were gaining valuable experience with their mentors.”

Nate Fortner added, “I would definitely recommend to other people in the Val Tech program to try to get an internship at JPL. It was the best experience of my life, and I can’t wait to get back there again soon.”

Val Tech is one of six CareerLink Academies in PYLUSD:

  • El Dorado: ED LAW Academy; Digital Media Arts Academy
  • Esperanza: Aztec Engineering/Manufacturing Academy; Medical Science Academy
  • Valencia: Val Tech
  • Yorba Linda: Mustang Business Academy
