Brookhaven Elementary School’s 5th graders are a hardworking and talented group of students. This was made evident by their two big projects during the first month of school!
First, the students created a movie that was shown to parents at back to school night. This idea began last year after 5th grade teachers decided they wanted to do something unique and fun for parents. They decided to film the students saying what teachers would normally say at back to school night. It was a hit! The movie was written and directed by language arts teacher, Sarah Walls. This project allowed students not only to be creative, but to also practice skills like speaking, listening, and collaborating with teams. Mrs. Walls helped lead students in the filming and editing of this movie project, giving them ownership of their learning.
The second project produced by 5th grade Bears took place at the first flag ceremony of the school year as students, teachers, and parents gathered to honor Patriot Day and Constitution Day. Eight students gave an eloquent introduction to honor both important days, then the entire 5th grade class performed the Preamble to the Constitution from memory. The students worked harded to memorize the Preamble during Social Studies time with Mrs. Walls. The 5th grade class represented Brookhaven well by giving a flawless performance and showing their patriotism by wearing red, white, and blue.
Videos of both performances can be found in the link below from Mrs. Walls’ class website at
