The Air University of the United States Air Force has recognized Esperanza High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) as one of the select units that have earned the Distinguished Unit Award (DUA) for Academic Year 2016-2017. The award recognizes the personal growth and accomplishments of the program’s cadets, the contributions of the instructors as mentors, and the generous support of the school and the local community. By earning the DUA, the program is recognized as being in the highest tier of the almost 900 Air Force JROTC units worldwide.

This award is even more significant because this was the program’s first year of eligibility since it was established in September 2014. With the start of the new school year, the program is off to an impressive start with enrollment growing by 50% and the program’s young men and women are actively engaged in several community service projects, field trips, a busy co-curricular program, and classes in Leadership Education and Aerospace Science.
