Esperanza High School celebrates its Class of 2023

Esperanza High School graduation 2023.

On Thursday, June 15, Esperanza High School (EHS) held its 2023 commencement ceremony where 328 seniors were presented their high school diplomas in Nathan Shapell Memorial Stadium.

Of those seniors, 89% have enrolled to further their education at a two or four-year college or university following high school. The EHS Class of 2023 included six National Honor Society recipients, 14 California Scholastic Federation awardees, 121 students recognized as Golden State Seal Merit Award winners, five State Seal of Civic Engagement earners, 45 State Seal of Biliteracy recipients, 119 CTE Pathway completers, and 11 4-year AVID students.

The ceremony included honored guests such as Board of Education Vice President Leandra Blades, Clerk Todd Frazier, and Trustee Carrie Buck as well as the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) Assistant Superintendent David Giordano, Interim Assistant Superintendent Nancy Blade, Executive Director Renee Gray, and Principal Jeff Giles.

Student Giselle Espino welcomed those in attendance while Sydney Hernandez and Kaitlyn Flanagan addressed the crowd with words of reflection on their time at Esperanza and well wishes for their fellow graduates.

Principal Giles also offered words of optimism to the graduates, sharing “…Class of 2023, I think we need you more than ever. You see, in many ways, our society is broken. There is so much anger in the world, so many people lining up to hurt other people, so many people who use their power for the negative not the positive. And so we need you, we need you to lead the way and bring to this world what I’ve seen you bring to Esperanza High School.”

Following the acceptance of the class by Trustee Buck, and the presentation of the diplomas, the new graduates turned their tassels from right to left while streamer cannons blasted off to conclude the ceremony and the students’ time at Esperanza. Congratulations, EHS graduates!
