El Dorado High School (EDHS) held its commencement ceremony on Wednesday, June 14, in Bradford Stadium. The Golden Hawk Class of 2023 included 480 graduating seniors; 90% of which have committed to attend a two or four-year college or university following graduation.
The ceremony included honored guests such as Board of Education Trustees Carrie Buck and Marilyn Anderson as well as the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss, Assistant Superintendent Richard McAlindin, and Directors Gina Aguilar, Alyssa Griffiths, Dr. Shelley Spessard, and Olivia Yaung, and Principal Joey Davis.
Graduating students Sophia Tovar, Joelle Wong, and Jayden Ford all addressed their fellow peers and the crowded stadium with words of reflection, wisdom, and inspiration revolving around their time as Golden Hawks.
Principal Davis also spoke to the graduates and those in attendance, sharing, “Obviously there is a great deal to congratulate the Class of 2023 for. Part of me wants them to stay another year, but they’ve earned their diploma and we can’t wait to see what they’ll do.” He went on to say, “Hawks, I wish I had some words of wisdom that would propel you to heights you never imagined, but I do not know that those words actually exist. I hope you made some friends, had some fun, and learned a lot. If nothing else, I hope you remember the words of Winston Churchill…”The courage to continue is what distinguishes success from failure.”
Upon receiving their diplomas, the Golden Hawks tossed their caps in the air to soar, signifying the end of their time in PYLUSD.
Notably, the EDHS Class of 2023 earned $3.3 million worth of scholarships with 80 seniors completing a CTE Pathway, 15 earning the seal of Civic Engagement, eight ED LAW and 60 Digital Media Arts Academy graduates, 29 AVID graduates, and 88 earning the State Seal of Biliteracy. Congratulations, Golden Hawks!
