El Dorado High School’s varsity football team competed in the CIF Southern Section Division 7 Championship Game on Saturday, November 25. For the finals, El Dorado was selected to host the event at Bradford Stadium in Placentia. Every game at the stadium is broadcast on the NFHS Network, the leader in streaming live and on-demand high school sports across the country. Typically, the stream is provided through a fixed camera setup to track movement on the field.
The week before the game, Valencia High School teacher Rod Boaz reached out to El Dorado to offer to enhance the live stream. Valencia has a Sports and Event Broadcasting class and Mr. Boaz, EDHS class of 1984, was excited to plan and prepare for the broadcast.
With the approval of CIF and NFHS, Mr. Boaz secured the students and announcers and reached out to EDHS Digital Media Teacher, Mark Switzer, to collaborate on the project. The live stream would include multiple cameras with instant replay capabilities, sideline interviews, and the look and feel of a real sports broadcast.
“This is a great example of the PYLUSD core value of collaboration,” Principal Davis noted.
While EDHS didn’t win the football game against Mayfair High School, the students and the community benefitted from an enhanced live stream to cheer on the Golden Hawks from near and afar.
“It was a great season and we are all very proud of our players and coaches,” said Principal Joey Davis.
EDHS would like to thank the VHS staff and students who supported the live broadcast of the game.
“Thanks to Rod Boaz and Mark Switzer for giving their time and talent. Thanks to EDHS alum Shawn Ray for his participation as a guest commentator,” shared Principal Davis. “All students involved had the opportunity to see what great collaboration can look like.”
