Jazz musicians from El Dorado play to a packed house at Florentine’s in Fullerton

The El Dorado High School jazz bands performed to a packed house at Florentine’s Grill in downtown Fullerton on Saturday, Feb. 18. Friends and family enjoyed lunch, while the jazz bands performed music they have been preparing for upcoming jazz festival competitions. Many students were featured as soloists throughout the afternoon.

This annual concert series is sponsored by the jazz education advocate organization, “Friends of Jazz.” Each year, they donate a stipend to the performing band and reward one musician with a scholarship for “Outstanding Musicianship.” El Dorado senior Erica Vellanoweth was this year’s recipient of the “Friends of Jazz Scholarship” for her outstanding solos on both the alto saxophone and flute.

This annual music series features some of the best high school jazz programs in Southern California. As always, all four PYLUSD high school jazz programs will be featured. You can catch the jazz bands from Yorba Linda High School on Saturday, Feb. 25, Valencia High School on Saturday, April 8, and Esperanza High School on Saturday, May 6. Each band will play from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at Florentine’s.
