Local church makes generous contribution to school district’s most underprivileged kids

On Tuesday, Yorba Linda-based Church of Grace donated 122 backpacks to the PYLUSD McKinney-Vento program. The donation took place at Topaz Elementary School, and the backpacks will directly benefit the most needy children throughout the entire district.

Each backpack contains between $65 to $90 of essential school supplies, based on grade level. These school supplies include basics, such as paper, pencils and pens, but they also contain more advanced items, like scientific calculators. These 122 backpacks equal an almost $10,000 donation on behalf of the church.

This is the third year that Church of Grace has donated to PYLUSD. During that first year, they donated 27 backpacks, along with various miscellaneous supplies. Last year, they upped their donation to 60 backpacks. This year, the congregation topped themselves with 122 backpacks, their biggest donation ever.

The McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act is a federal law that ensures educational stability for homeless children and youth. PYLUSD has approximately 2,900 students who are homeless or living in transitional situations, such as doubled and tripled up in an apartment or house designed for one family. Thanks to McKinney-Vento funding, the district is able to provide many of these students with school supplies, food, blankets and other necessities.

The PYLUSD McKinney-Vento program accepts donations from a wide variety of individuals and organizations. If you would like to make a donation or have suggestions for future donations, contact Jon Matson by phone at 714-986-7280, or by email at jmatson@pylusd.org.
