On behalf of our Board of Education and the entire Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD), we are deeply saddened by the tragic mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida on Tuesday, February 14. As we reflect on this horrific occurrence, I wanted to take a moment to thank you, our PYLUSD community, for your unwavering support of our schools, our employees, and most importantly, our students. Many of our students may struggle with what has occurred in Florida and we encourage our schools, and you as families, to be mindful of questions that may arise surrounding this tragedy. Should students need additional support coping with what has happened, our district has counselors and psychologists available to assist. It is important to keep in mind that each and every day, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District works tirelessly to ensure that all students and staff are afforded the opportunity to learn and work in a safe and secure environment. Safety has always been, and will forever be, our top priority. We also want to extend our sincere gratitude to all of our local first responders, who work so diligently to safeguard our campuses and community. As a school district, we will continue to strengthen our procedures with local law enforcement and health agencies to ensure planning, training, and response to such instances of uncertainty operate efficiently. In addition, the district also has the following safety plans and procedures in place: Our partnerships with Orange County Sheriff’s Department (OCSD), Placentia Police Department (PPD), Anaheim Police Department (APD), Fullerton Police Department (FPD), and Brea Police Department (BPD) provide us with School Resource Officers (SRO), which are local law enforcement officers who are on our campuses to provide security and crime prevention services to our schools. All school sites and district facilities have safety plans in place which are annually updated. Schools regularly conduct safety drills with students and staff to prepare for various situations with lockdown, shelter in place, “run hide fight,” as well as earthquake and fire drills. Lastly, we encourage everyone in PYLUSD to remain vigilant in working together to keep our schools safe – if you see something, say something. Report unusual or suspicious activity to district or school administrators, and encourage students to do the same with staff members or through mechanisms like Text-a-Tip, if available. In moving forward, we will continue to keep the entire Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School community, as well as the larger Parkland community, in our thoughts.
