Valencia wins prestigious AVID Teacher Advocacy Award

VHS AVID award winners.

Congratulations to the Valencia High School (VHS) AVID Site Team for winning the AVID Teacher Advocacy Award for their exceptional advocacy of students and outstanding leadership in the support of the AVID mission: to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

The Tigers were nominated for the award by staff members at the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD), and were judged based on the following criteria:

  • Success of the site team in exceptional advocacy for students and demonstration of exceptional teacher leadership by the site team in supporting the AVID Mission in their school, district, and community
  • Results of the school in utilizing the AVID College Readiness System leading to student success (i.e. AP/IB/honors course completion, four-year college going rate, A-G completion rate)
  • Strength of AVID school-wide implementation including level of certification and CCI/CSS data

Valencia’s team will be presented with the award at the AVID Summer Institute in Sacramento on June 28, 2018.  The Tigers will also receive $10,000 to further support and increase the impact of AVID at Valencia.

In addition, AVID teacher, Brandon Frank, has been selected as a speaker for the AVID Summer Institute in Sacramento!  Nearly one thousand people around the country entered AVID’s speaker contest.

“This is a tremendous honor and well deserved,” VHS Principal Olivia Yaung mentioned. “His speech will be given to thousands of educators on June 28, the same day Valencia will receive the Teacher Advocacy Award.”

Great work, Tigers!
