On Wednesday, November 28, 2018, all four associated student body (ASB) programs from Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) comprehensive high schools joined together for a day of professional development for the first time ever. Nearly 200 students from El Dorado, Esperanza, Valencia, and Yorba Linda high schools united at the District’s Performing Arts Center that morning.
Known as PYLUSD ASB Leadership Day, this event created the perfect opportunity for students to reflect on their individual school programs, learn about effective leaderships strategies, network with fellow PYLUSD students, and hear from motivational speaker and longtime educator, Jeff Eben.
Eben, founder and CEO of the How Many Wins Foundation, shared the significance of learning character, integrity, and friendship throughout students’ educational journeys. He also emphasized the important role that school leadership programs play in creating positive experiences and spaces of belonging for a school’s entire student population.
Following Eben’s presentation, and a chance for students to snap a selfie alongside him, the group moved to the El Dorado High School practice gymnasium to continue their day with a team from Leadership Inspirations. Leadership Inspirations is a local organization that creates and facilities programs where participants have the chance to experience, learn, and practice leadership development skills.
The students’ time with the Leadership Inspirations coaches included various large group activities and smaller breakout sessions centered around the themes of connecting, networking, problem solving, and culture building.
After a morning filled with opportunities for personal and professional growth, the students enjoyed lunch together before returning to school for the remainder of the day. This event would not have been made possible without the direction of the District’s activities directors and coordinators including Eron Campuzano from El Dorado, Meghann Lukach from Esperanza, Corinna Harnett and Lauren Stouffer from Valencia, and Shea Runge from Yorba Linda, as well as support from Superintendent, Dr. Greg Plutko.
The District’s inaugural ASB Leadership Day is just one example of how students are provided with an array of enrichment opportunities to expand their educational experience in PYLUSD.
