On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, five associated student body (ASB) programs from Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) high schools joined together for a day of professional learning. Nearly 200 students from El Camino Real, El Dorado, Esperanza, Valencia, and Yorba Linda high schools united at the District’s Performing Arts Center that morning.
Known as PYLUSD ASB Leadership Day, this event first started in 2018 in order to create an opportunity for students to reflect on their individual school programs, learn about effective leaderships strategies, network with fellow PYLUSD students, and hear from a motivational speaker.
This year’s speaker, Tyler Durman, is a well-known motivational speaker who encourages students to care for each other, make good choices, and become positive leaders in their school and community. During his time with the PYLUSD students, he also emphasized the important role that ASB programs play in being leaders who create a sense of belonging for all students on campus.
Following Durman’s presentation, and a chance for students to introduce themselves, the group moved to various locations on El Dorado High School’s campus to continue their learning. Each school was tasked with leading an unique session including topics such as activities on a school campus, how to involve the community and feeder schools, marketing schools, connection by feeling and emotions, and more.
The students’ time remained very focused on themes such as confidence building, spirit, problem solving, and culture, just to name a few.
After a morning filled with opportunities for personal and professional growth, the students enjoyed lunch together before returning to school for the remainder of the day.
This event would not have been made possible without the direction of the District’s activities directors and coordinators including Eron Campuzano from El Dorado, Meghann Lukach from Esperanza, Lauren Stouffer from Valencia, and Shea Runge from Yorba Linda, as well as support from Superintendent, Dr. Greg Plutko.
The District’s annual ASB Leadership Day is an example of how students are provided with a wide variety of enrichment opportunities to expand their overall educational experience in PYLUSD.
