In October, Valencia High School’s Education Pathway students enrolled in the capstone course, Principles of Teaching and Learning, began participating in work-based learning at Ruby Drive Elementary School. Principles of Teaching and Learning is a Career Technical Education (CTE) course offered through our partnership with North Orange County ROP. This course provides students the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the workplace. Students report to the elementary school three days per week during 1st and 2nd periods and work with students in grades K-6. In addition to gaining high school credit for taking this course, the course is articulated with Santiago Canyon Community College and is UC/CSU approved as a College-preparatory Elective.

Principles of Teaching Learning students enjoy working with Ruby Drive Elementary students and report back to their peers on their progress. Student-workers participate in various activities such as facilitating small group lessons, working one-on-one to strengthen language acquisition skills, managing cooperative learning, assisting students needing additional support, and aiding teachers with other classroom duties. The high school students also gain valuable connections with the elementary students and report how much they enjoy watching their progress.
