Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District students in the GOALS hockey program have had a great time practicing and learning new skills over the past few months. Rio Vista Elementary School’s two teams, the Skating Leopards and the Mighty Leopards, were ready to face Melrose Elementary School and Ruby Drive Elementary School in their first games of the season!
On Tuesday, April 19, the Skating Leopards took on the Melrose Marlins in a close game. According to teacher Leonel Diaz, all of Rio Vista’s players did an amazing job attempting to make passes and get some shots into the goal. The Skating Leopards took the lead 1-0 in the last 20 seconds of the game when fifth grader Erasmo Huerta scored the first goal of the season! Woohoo!
Rio Vista loves supporting their two hockey teams! Games will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:45-6:15 p.m. throughout the end of April with championship games taking place in May.
GOALS, which stands for Growth Opportunities through Athletics Learning and Service, and the district’s CASA program have provided the opportunity for hundreds of PYLUSD students to learn hockey since the early 2000s.
