Rio Vista Elementary Hosts Engaging AVID Family Game Night

On Thursday, January 16, Rio Vista Elementary School hosted its highly anticipated annual AVID Family Night, drawing over 250 students and family members. This year’s event provided an interactive and engaging experience focused on college and career readiness through AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) and the school’s recently integrated RIASEC (Career Connect) component.

Families were welcomed into the multipurpose room, where they received Gamer Passports and Profile Cards to guide them through six unique stations. Each station featured a game aligned with one of the RIASEC character traits: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. Students rated each activity using their profile cards, which served as a quick assessment of their natural inclinations. If a student enjoyed a particular game more than others, it often indicated a strong alignment with the corresponding character trait.

Games were facilitated by Rio Vista teachers and Valadez Middle School Academy AVID Student Ambassadors. The activities included Twister (Realistic), Puzzles (Investigative), an AVID Blind Drawing Challenge (Artistic), Charades (Social), Cups and Downs (Enterprising), and Giant Jenga (Conventional). As families participated, conversations naturally focused on college and career pathways, helping students connect their interests and strengths with potential future opportunities.

A brief AVID message reminded students that their unique talents and interests could align with a variety of college and career possibilities. “It’s never too early to start thinking and dreaming about what your future could hold,” the message emphasized.

Following the structured activities, families gathered outside to enjoy their own board games at the lunch tables, support fifth-grade fundraising efforts through dinner purchases, and explore PTA membership opportunities and door prizes. Students were especially excited to challenge each other on Nintendo Switches displayed on two massive 85-inch screens.

The school expressed heartfelt gratitude to the teachers, staff, volunteers, and PTA for their contributions to making the event a meaningful and enjoyable experience for all. The success of the night reinforced the importance of bringing the school community together for learning and fun.

Rio Vista Elementary looks forward to hosting the next AVID Family Night and continuing to foster excitement for college, career, and community connections.
