Valencia High School Hosts Local Educators for AVID Demonstration Showcase

On Tuesday, January 14, Valencia High School hosted over 56 educators, including teachers, administrators, and counselors, from Southern California high schools. The event, known as the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Showcase, offered attendees the chance to share best practices, enhance their AVID implementation, and highlight robust AVID systems.

Principal Chris Herzfeld remarked that many visitors praised the school’s positive culture, noting comments such as, “The interaction between students and staff feels genuine and supportive.” Attendees also appreciated the dynamic instructional practices demonstrated during classroom visits. Additionally, the culinary program, led by Chef Bradford and his students, enriched the experience by preparing and serving meals for the guests.

During the first and second periods, visitors toured classrooms and observed AVID WICOR instructional strategies, including focused note-taking, collaborative structures, and student-led inquiry through Socratic seminars. These approaches exemplify Valencia High School’s dedication to fostering critical thinking, collaboration, and academic excellence.

The success of the event was made possible through the collective efforts of AVID Coordinator Corinna Harnett; Assistant Principal Paola Suchsland; Activities Director Lauren Paquet; Counselor Liz Nasouf, and staff members Kiley Kendall, Yesenia Castillo, Calen Rau, Tony Martin, Krista Secoda, Alyson Dixon, Traci Eseltine, David Tong-Nguyen, Eric Huang, Rebecca Bonet, and Sergio Narez. Their teamwork and commitment ensured an inspiring and impactful day for all participants.
