One year ago, a group of students approached the administration at El Dorado High School and asked to meet during their ED LAW Capstone class. Their teacher Sunshine Cavalluzzi had asked the class to identify an issue they would collectively like to address with positive change (based on proposals and pitches from class members) and form a task force to further research the issue, develop a plan of action, and present it to policymakers.
Since May is Mental Health Awareness month, the Golden Hawks decided to plan a schoolwide activity focused on the mental health of the students at El Dorado. What they came up with was a project called “Write Well” and the intent was to give students an opportunity to write about their mental health challenges and help break the stigma around anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues.
With a few minor adjustments, their vision became reality this month at El Dorado. The project was supported by Wellness Specialist, Cesar Valdez and Librarian, Christina Nolasco. Pictured above are some of the remaining students (many graduated) with the display of student submissions in the library, as well as the original photo taken during their presentation.
The students involved originally were: Alig, Rachel A.Aquino, Daniel J.Britton, Ian A.Darvish, Sophia R.Diaz, EthanFaul, Bailey R.Kliss, Samantha J.Laboissonniere, Lauren G.Lin, Carissa K.Marasco, Alyssa K.Moran, Kayla J.Murray, Jordyn N.Rodriguez, Victoria A.Solheid, Emily P.Trinh, Michelle A.
