On Friday, Jan. 15, Fairmont Elementary School’s gifted and talented education (GATE) students participated in a technology academy with GATE lead teacher, Mrs. Shea, and parent, Mr. Lee. The students explored a coding program called Scratch, created by the MIT Media Lab. Mrs. Shea and Mr. Lee led the students through the basics of the coding program, as well as the process used to create their own game.
Over the next eight weeks, the students will develop interactive stories, games or animations that they will showcase at our GATE Family Night on Thursday, March 10.
The students’ excitement is contagious and a joy to watch. Fairmont staff is looking forward to seeing what their creative and collaborative minds produce during this academy. Students are learning and utilizing valuable skills – collaboration, communication, creativity and critical thinking – that will help them succeed in the 21st century!
