Congratulations are in order for El Dorado High School video production graduate Nikola Boyanov for winning an Emmy for Outstanding Editing in a Drama Series! An Emmy for television is considered one of the four major American awards for performing arts and entertainment alongside the Grammy for music, the Oscar for film, and the Tony for stage theatre.
Nikola (pictured middle right) was a part of El Dorado’s video production class and student-led broadcast, Hawk Talk, as a senior during the 2007-2008 school year. He then went on to Chapman University’s Film School and is now an editor for a popular HBO series.
Although Nikola attended El Dorado High School before the official creation of the Digital Media Arts Academy (DMAA), he benefitted from taking Mr. Mark Switzer’s video production class during his senior year. A few years after Nikola graduated, DMAA was officially formed and has grown tremendously in size and popularity. It now includes four robust pathways for students to choose from including photography, graphic design, game art design, and of course, broadcast film.
The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District’s secondary career technical education (CTE) programs, known as CareerLink Academies, allow PYLUSD high school students to see the real-world relevance and applicability of their curriculum, gain new industry-specific skills, network with professionals in their area of interest, engage in internships and job training in their fields, and earn credits and certifications that facilitate their transition into collegiate programs of study or the workforce. DMAA is one of six academies and Nikola’s great success makes evident the importance of career technical education in the district’s high schools. PYLUSD and EDHS are proud of this Golden Hawk!
