PYLUSD groundskeeper makes special connection with Mabel Paine student

Employee and student

Mabel Paine Elementary School kindergartener Richard Zhang and Maintenance and Facilities groundskeeper Rigo Flores recently shared a special moment during the school day. Education Specialist Cindy Davila shared the following about their interaction.

“First, let me say that I have been a special educator for many years, and what I witnessed on Friday was so amazing that I just had to share it. I know that PYLUSD encompasses the philosophy of inclusion, but seeing it in action with our grounds department was priceless. I have a kindergarten student who saw the groundskeeper come onto the playground with his blower and immediately ran up to him, pointing to the machine. The landscaper, Rigo, took the time to show him the machine, even letting him hold it. The student then proceeded to point to the part of the machine on Rigo’s back. Rigo talked to the student, told him, “heavy,” and then removed the machine to show the student it was heavy. The student wanted to put it on, and Rigo assisted and let him. The pictures show the smiles on both Rigo and the student. Seeing a groundskeeper take time out of his busy day to interact and engage with the student was so kind. I truly saw the definition of inclusiveness in his actions! My heart was so happy to see the district I chose to work for embracing an inclusive environment, even within our grounds department!”
