College spirit is demonstrated at Yorba Linda Middle School (YLMS) through the fall holiday season. Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes researched a college of their choice, then decorated pumpkins to reflect the college colors and mascot.
The AVID program at YLMS prepares students in grades 6, 7, and 8 to develop the skills needed for college and career readiness. A focus on writing, organization, collaboration, inquiry, and reading is implemented throughout the elective curriculum. The elective also empowers students to utilize their learning and individual determination to be successful students prepared to take higher-level courses.
The College Pumpkin Decorating activity culminated in a schoolwide competition in which staff members voted for the best pumpkin.
AVID Coordinator Lyndsey Smith states, “This is a fun way to entice students to start thinking about colleges with a little research and working together as a group to create a pumpkin. Later this year students will visit our high school programs, as well as visit local colleges.”
