The Placentia Chamber of Commerce recently awarded ten educator grants to Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) teachers totaling over $9,000. Annually, these grants provide funds for student-driven projects that promote entrepreneurship and business skills while supporting innovative classroom instruction that enhances learning for students.

Here’s a look at the teacher recipients and the entrepreneurial projects they will be bringing to their classrooms.

  • Ashlee Duncan, Wagner Elementary School: “Real-World Economics Education for 6th Graders” is designed to provide a unique and immersive platform where students actively manage their businesses, pay rent and gain a profound understanding of economic concepts.
  • Audra Ross, El Dorado High School: “Portable Backdrops and Backdrop Support Stand for Photo Booth Jobs” will allow students to learn the photography trade and take group photos at dances and special events. Students will improve their group portrait photography and social skills by dealing face to face with photography clients when running the photo booth.
  • Jill Romero, Yorba Linda High School: “Food Truck Wars” will allow students to create a business plan where they will practice their team building skills during the planning, development and presentation of their food truck idea to their classmates and student body.
  • Kaitlyn Reuter, Valencia High School: “Sustainability in Economics” project to demonstrate to high school economics students the role of sustainability that governments and businesses take to fulfill the socially optimal point of output that would benefit society as a whole.
  • Lauren Hartshorne, Parkview School: “InnovateCommerce” project to integrate 3D printing and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) into the school curriculum with a specific focus on fostering business and commerce skills.
  • Madison Waltemeyer, Yorba Linda High School: “Mustang Market operations & project based workshops” provides students in the Mustang Business Academy with hands-on experiences while serving the student community.
  • Makenna Smith, Yorba Linda Middle School: “Student-Run Business” project will be run by students with moderate/severe disabilities. They will learn how to apply real-life skills by organizing and running a student store.
  • Michael Woodward, Esperanza High School: “Entrepreneurship 101” will allow students to design and produce Esperanza Aztecs related merchandise and manage all aspects related to the promotion, sale and distribution of those products.
  • Sarah Belsey, Valencia High School: “VHS Coffee Crew” will increase social communication and vocational skills for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities by providing hands-on training and job coaching. This grant will allow for expansion with equipment upgrades and supplies.
  • Sherrie Olive, Valencia High School: “Preparing Art for Sale” and “Marketing Your Art” projects  will provide funding to teach students how to prepare their two-dimensional art works for display and sale by using tools to make frames, cut mattes and secure artwork. Then they will research ways to sell their work by creating and planning activities such as chalk walks to sell their artwork in a way other than Etsy.
