PYLUSD Unveils Second Family Resource Center at Melrose Elementary, Strengthening Community Support

On September 13, the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of its second Family Resource Center (FRC) at Melrose Elementary. The event, attended by school officials, community leaders, and local partners, celebrated the district’s commitment to supporting students and families by providing access to essential resources.

Renee Gray, Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, opened the ceremony, emphasizing the importance of family involvement in a child’s education. “The FRC is more than just a resource hub,” she said. “It’s a welcoming space where families can receive support in a non-judgmental, inclusive environment.” Gray highlighted the FRC’s role in connecting families to services such as food assistance, counseling, healthcare, housing support, and financial guidance, underscoring the district’s focus on helping students thrive both academically and socially.

She proudly acknowledged the support of several community partners who will be involved in offering ongoing services through the center, including Family Health Matters, Lot 318, REACH Foundation, AltaMed, Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County, The R.E.A.C.H. Foundation and Healthy Smiles.

Following her remarks, Melrose Elementary Principal Dr. Janice Weber and Valadez Middle School Academy Principal Will Truong spoke about the vital role the FRC will play in bridging the gap between home and school. Dr. Weber noted that the center aligns with Melrose’s mission of creating a sense of “familia” within the school community. Truong echoed her sentiments, adding that the FRC will further support the district’s theme, “Every Student, Every Day,” by providing families with the tools they need to ensure student success.

Superintendent Dr. Alex Cherniss introduced the members of the PYLUSD Board of Education, who have been instrumental in the development of the new FRC. He also recognized the presence of community dignitaries, including representatives from the offices of local politicians, reflecting the broad support for this initiative.

The event also featured remarks from Joshualyn Hartman of Family Health Matters, one of the many partners collaborating with the district to offer services through the FRC. Hartman highlighted the various healthcare services that will be available to families, including health insurance application assistance, mobile vision services, and preventative healthcare.

As the ceremony concluded, Renee Gray invited attendees to join the ribbon-cutting and explore the new center. She expressed gratitude to the district staff and community partners who contributed to the FRC’s creation, recognizing their efforts in providing valuable resources that will benefit the entire community.

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District’s new Family Resource Center is now open, ready to serve as a beacon of support for families in need, and as a testament to the district’s ongoing dedication to putting students first.
