Valadez Middle School Academy Celebrates 15th Annual 'Read for the Record' with Melrose and Rio Vista First Graders

On Thursday, October 26, students at Valadez Middle School Academy hosted the 15th annual “Read for the Record” event with first graders from Melrose and Rio Vista elementary schools joining to celebrate this worldwide initiative.

Jumpstart’s Read for the Record aims to unite millions of young children and valued adults to read the same book, on the same day, across communities worldwide. The campaign emphasizes the critical role of early literacy and language skills in helping every child succeed.

As part of this cherished tradition, the Valadez Eagles collaborated with their first-grade buddies from feeder elementary schools to share the joy of reading. This year, eighth-grade students eagerly paired up with their younger counterparts to read Piper Chen Sings by authors Phillipa Soo and Maris Pasquale Doran, illustrated by Qin Leng.

Principal Will Truong extended a warm welcome, underscoring the event’s significance. “I know that reading will unlock your imagination, focus your creativity, and allow you to reach your dreams,” he shared.

Following the principal’s address, middle and elementary students settled side-by-side and began reading together in the quad. Throughout the morning, buddies enjoyed performances from the Beginning Percussions and Estrellas Show Choir and a variety of rotating activities, including art projects and games. The event also featured fundraising efforts for the local non-profit Higher Ground Youth & Family Services.

Before departing, each first grader from Melrose and Rio Vista received a personal copy of Piper Chen Sings to take home, inspiring a love of reading to share with family and friends.
