On Thursday, October 24, 2024, Melrose Elementary held an exciting 3rd Grade AVID Family Science Night, where over 100 third graders and their families gathered for a hands-on evening of learning. Led by Melrose teacher Mrs. Tina Mora, the event began with a brief presentation on the benefits of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) strategies, after which families were invited to explore various science stations focused on Reading, Inquiry, and Collaboration.
Students and families eagerly worked together at each station, exploring essential questions about forces and motion through interactive activities like marble mazes and magnet experiments. Assisting with the evening were Valencia High School AVID Scholars, a dedicated group of juniors and seniors who helped with setup and takedown, facilitated activities, and engaged with families in both English and Spanish. The high school leaders guided students through each station by prompting critical thinking with inquiry stems and encouraging collaboration to solve science challenges.
This community event was made even more special by Porto’s Bakery, which generously donated pastries for all to enjoy. Melrose Elementary and Valencia High School AVID were thrilled to partner for such an educational and inspiring evening, demonstrating the power of AVID’s community-driven approach to learning.
