Ruby Drive Elementary Showcases College-Readiness Through AVID

Ruby Drive AVID Showcase

On Wednesday, October 15, Ruby Drive Elementary School hosted its annual Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Showcase, highlighting the academic growth and accomplishments of students participating in the schoolwide program. The event welcomed 35 teachers and administrators from five schools within the district and three schools from neighboring districts, underscoring Ruby Drive’s continued commitment to cultivating a college-going culture and equipping students with the skills and mindsets essential for postsecondary success.

Principal Carmona opened the showcase with a warm welcome and a presentation on AVID’s mission to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and lifelong success. Her remarks emphasized the implementation of AVID’s core strategies—organization, critical thinking, and collaboration—anchored in the WICOR framework (Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading), which is embedded across all TK–6 classrooms at Ruby Drive.

During classroom observations, student ambassadors proudly demonstrated their AVID binders and folders, illustrating effective note-taking and organizational practices. Visitors observed engaging lessons across grade levels, including philosophical chairs in first grade, collaborative writing in fourth grade, and WICOR partner work in sixth grade. The enthusiasm, confidence, and academic discourse displayed by students reflected the program’s powerful impact on learning and engagement.

The AVID Showcase served as more than a demonstration of instructional practices, it was a celebration of student determination, perseverance, and growth. Visiting educators left inspired by Ruby Drive’s commitment to fostering a culture of academic excellence and college readiness, reinforcing the school’s leadership in preparing every student for future educational and personal achievement.
