PYLUSD Welcomes New Educators with 2026 New Hire Institute

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) welcomed its newest educators ahead of the 2026-2027 school year with a comprehensive New Hire Institute designed to help teachers build connections, strengthen instructional practice, and feel prepared for their first days in PYLUSD.

The multi-day experience brought together new educators serving students from transitional kindergarten through high school across schools throughout the district. The Institute began by welcoming employees to PYLUSD and introducing them to the district’s strategic direction and the PYL Promise: Rooted in Connection, Ready for Tomorrow, Stronger Together. New hires explored how these priorities connect to the student experience and to PYLUSD’s commitment to ensuring students feel seen, supported, and prepared for the future.

Rather than focusing solely on procedures and logistics, this year’s New Hire Institute placed a strong emphasis on teaching and learning. Educators participated in interactive sessions centered on building relationships, student engagement, growth mindset, collaboration, belonging, and providing students with multiple ways to engage with and demonstrate their learning. Participants experienced many of the strategies as learners themselves before considering how they could apply them in their own classrooms.

Technology and artificial intelligence were also an important part of the learning experience. New teachers explored tools including Gemini and NotebookLM, with an emphasis on using AI thoughtfully to support lesson planning, creativity, and student learning. They also received hands-on introductions to Google Classroom, Pear Assessment, Clever, Aeries, the PYLUSD Teacher Resource Hub, and other district-supported digital resources.

Throughout the Institute, teachers were given time to move from learning to application. They developed and refined standards-based lessons that incorporated clear objectives, opportunities for student participation, multiple modes of engagement, representation and expression, assessment, and student relevance. The experience culminated in dedicated lesson-planning time, allowing new educators to put their learning into practice as they prepared to welcome students.

Feedback from participants reflected the value of the expanded approach. New hires consistently highlighted relationship building, collaboration, AI, Pear Assessment, Google Classroom, and the Teacher Resource Hub as particularly helpful components of the experience. One participant shared, “I appreciated the direct modeling for the lessons related to engagement and relationship building in the classroom. I walked away with great activities I could implement with my students.” Another noted that learning about AI provided clear examples of both how the technology could support instruction and how educators should use it responsibly.

Participants also appreciated learning the practical “nuts and bolts” of working in PYLUSD. Teachers reported that walkthroughs of the Teacher Resource Hub, Clever, Aeries, district applications, curriculum resources, and professional learning opportunities helped them feel more confident and supported as they prepared for the start of school.

The 2026 New Hire Institute served as both a welcome to PYLUSD and an investment in the district’s newest educators. By combining relationship building, high-quality instructional practices, innovative technology, district resources, and time for collaboration and application, PYLUSD’s newest teachers entered the school year with new tools, new connections, and a stronger understanding of how they can help fulfill the PYL Promise for every student.
