Last week, 56 cadets from the Air Force Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program at Esperanza High School traveled to Los Angeles harbor to tour the USS Iowa, a 45,000-ton U.S. Navy battleship whose service extended from World War II though the 1990s. They learned about the history of the ship, including the fact that it hosted five presidents over the years. The cadets travelled through the ship’s bridge, its mess decks and crew’s quarters. Most impressive were its 16-inch main guns, capable of shooting a shell weighing over one ton and hitting a target over 23 miles away. Perhaps the high point of the day was a stop at HomeTown Buffet, where the cadets were treated to an all-you-can-eat free lunch!
